Top 100 Children’s Novels #25: The Watsons Go to Birmingham, 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis

Below is a book review of our next class novel by By
Curtis has the ability to make you laugh and cry and think deeply about something, all within a few pages. – Heather Christensen
The character voices are so charming and right on. It sweeps you up in this funny tale of a loving and slightly wacky family – until a tragedy pulls everything out from underneath you. As it should. – Emily Myhr
It was the book that took Christopher Paul Curtis off the assembly line and into libraries.  I once read or saw an interview with him where he discussed this title.  Essentially he said that while authors aren’t supposed to say which of their books is their “favorite” his will always be The Watsons since it changed his life in one fell swoop.  It may surprise some people to see The Watsons coming in well above Bud Not Buddy on this list, but for most people this is the Curtis book that will always be first in their hearts.
The plot description from the publisher reads, “Enter the hilarious world of 10-year-old Kenny and his family, the Weird Watsons of Flint, Michigan. There’s Momma, Dad, little sister Joetta, and brother Byron, who’s 13 and an ‘official juvenile delinquent.’ When Momma and Dad decide it’s time for a visit to Grandma, Dad comes home with the amazing Ultra-Glide, and the Watsons set out on a trip like no other. They’re heading South. They’re going to Birmingham, Alabama, toward one of the darkest moments in America’s history.”
In Funny Business: Conversations With Writers of Comedy by Leonard Marcus we get the true scoop behind this book’s creation.  “After reading several of his letters, Kay Sookram, his Canadian girlfriend and future wife, told Curtis firmly that he should be a writer.  He had begun to think so too.”  Fast forward ten years into the future and, “Curtis’s career took off when an unpublished version of The Watsons took first place in a writing contest and he was offered a contract to publish his novel.”  Nicely done!  Wonder what that writing contest was.
In 1996 it won a Newbery Honor, beaten only by The Midwife’s Apprentice by Karen Cushman.  It also won a Coretta Scott King Award that year.
By the way, Mr. Curtis has just the loveliest things to say about teachers as part of the publisher’s Teachers Guide online:
“What a thrill the publication of The Watson’s Go to Birmingham–1963 has been for me! I’ve been asked many times what the highlight of this experience has been and I don’t have to think at all before answering. It occurred on February 15, 1996 at a reception given by the Flint Public Library when, to my complete surprise and delight, I was introduced by my third-grade teacher, Ms. Suzanne Henry. It wasn’t the fact that in her introduction she gave me a gold star and told everyone that I was Room C’s “Good Citizen of the Day” that affected me so–it was the surprise I felt on realizing that she had always been such an important and powerful part of my life. I hadn’t seen Ms. Henry for more than 35 years, and I had spent only nine months of my life with her when I was 7 or 8–yet as she told everyone gathered in the library how proud of me she was, I found myself near tears.

Dear Parents,

The Phantom Tollbooth

When Milo finds an enormous package in his bedroom, he’s delighted to have something to relieve his boredom with school. And when he opens it to find – as the label states – One Genuine Turnpike Tollbooth, he gets right into his pedal car and sets off through the Tollbooth and away on a magical journey!

Milo’s extraordinary voyage takes him into such places as the Land of Expectation, the Doldrums, the Mountains of Ignorance and the Castle in the Air. He meets the weirdest and most unexpected characters (such as Tock, the watchdog, the Gelatinous Giant, and the Threadbare Excuse, who mumbles the same thing over and over again), and, once home, can hardly wait to try out the Tollbooth again. But will it be still there when he gets back from school?

Dear Parents,

CSPN is hosting an exciting new event in January and we need volunteers.

What: Family Fun Night

When: Thursday, January 24 from 5:45PM to 7:45PM

Why: Because January is a blah month full of Christmas bills and cold weather, so come to Campus School and have some FREE fun!

Theme: Career Night - Come find out what cool jobs your classmates' parents have!

Event Overview: Val Russell (Porter’s Mom) has volunteered to bring her amazing aerial group to Campus School and perform 3 shows for Family Fun Night. This is going to be a huge treat for all of us. While it may be hard to be as cool as Val’s aerial act we know we have lots of talented parent’s at Campus School and we want to share these talents with our kids. The plan is to have parents manning different career rooms so the kids can experience all types of careers during the evenings. So far we have the following rooms:

• Airline Pilots (need/have 1 volunteer David)

• Chefs (need)

• Artist (need)

• Journalist/Authors (need)

• Gardening/Landscaping (have 2 volunteers Corrie/Joellen)

Computer Programming (need/have 1 volunteer Libby)

• Teachers/Professors (need/ have 1 volunteer Riki J.)

Please email Julie Nanney at bonanney@gmail.com to volunteer to help in one of the career rooms or have an idea for another room. Also, you can sign up to help on the wiki link below.

The Phantom Tollbooth, Welcome Back Letter, and Family Fun Night

Next week we begin The Phantom Tollbooth!

Dear Parents,
Welcome back to the second semester and the beginning of a new calendar year.
I want to give you a quick update on the events at Campus School.  As you know, we lost one of our children, Quindarious McGaughy, over the holidays.  We observed a moment of silence this morning in his honor.  We had three mental health professionals in the building who spent time with his class, answering questions and allowing them the opportunity to reminisce.  They were also available to any student who may have needed support as they processed the loss.  It has been a sad day here, but sadness is the by-product of love, which is a gift to us all.
I also want you to be aware that we are reviewing our emergency management plan and have requested the director of emergency management at the University come to  review all the plans and drills we have in place.  As we reevaluate our security, we may make some changes that you will be notified of immediately.  Please know that everything we do, from parking lot expectations, to sign-in/out requirements, to placard requirements on the passenger side visor of your car, are strictly in the best interest of our children.  There are easier methods, but these are the safest we know of and that is our top priority.
Campus School staff and faculty are proud to be a part of your families.  Thank you for your confidence and support in allowing us to spend our days with your most precious children.
Sincerely,
Susan Copeland
