Week 2 News

Next week we will discuss Environmental Relationships.

Students will be assigned their first homework assignment (cell essay) in science Friday, July 31st.  The assignment is due Thursday, August 6th.

Parent Night is next Thursday, August 6 at 6 p.m.  For fifth graders, please go to your child's homeroom class.  We will all present school-level and grade-level information so you don't miss a thing!

As you probably know, Campus School collects a $25 supply fee each year.  This fee helps us purchase curriculum materials and covers the cost of student planners.  If you could send it in by next Friday, August 7, we would greatly appreciate it.  Please make checks out to the CSPN and turn the fee into your child's homeroom teacher.

Thank you!

Week 1 Cells

Next week's lesson is designed to introduce the plant and animal cell along with all of its parts that allow it to function. They will identify the parts of the cell and describe each part’s job.

Cells are the building blocks for various organisms’ systems (organs, structural walls, skin, leaves,....)
All living things are made up of cells. The structures of different types of cells are related to their functions.
Animal cells and plant cells have features in common, such as a nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria and
ribosomes.
Plant cells also have a cell wall, and often have chloroplasts and a permanent vacuole.
Animal and Plant Cells
Function of cells which animal and plant cells have in common
Nucleus
Contains genetic material, which controls the activities of the cell
Cytoplasm
Most chemical processes take place here, controlled by enzymes
Cell membrane
Controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell
Mitochondria
Most energy is released by respiration here
Ribosomes
Protein synthesis happens here
Plant cells also have extra parts:
Cell wall
Strengthens the cell
Chloroplasts
Contain chlorophyll, which absorbs light energy for photosynthesis
Permanent vacuole
Filled with cell sap to help keep the cell full of material
